In Philippians 4:8, we are told clearly what kind of thoughts we should be thinking on:
The part about “whatsoever things are lovely” has always given me pause. I find it easier to identify things that are true, or honest, or a good report, or praise… but lovely?
When I looked up the word ‘lovely’ in my very favorite dictionary, the Webster’s 1828 (affiliate link), I got a much better sense of what that word means.
that may excite LOVE;
possessing qualities which may invite AFFECTION.
So, lovely thoughts are thoughts that spark love and affection in me!
I realized that the reason why I love reading my favorite daily devotional book, “Morning and Evening” by Charles Spurgeon (affiliate link), is because it is a consistent source of lovely thoughts about my God. These thoughts cause me to look to my God with fresh love and affection! What a treasure it is to find such a storehouse!
Let me share a couple of lovely thought quotes that have blessed me this past week:
Lovely thoughts put wind in my sails. They give me hope and energy as I go through my day. They lift me up out of this present world and set my affections on things above! On a practical basis, they give me food for thought as I go about my daily tasks. May we experience the joy of lovely thoughts each day!
Where do you find your lovely thoughts? I’d love for you to share with me in the comments below!
