Lovely Thoughts

In Philippians 4:8, we are told clearly what kind of thoughts we should be thinking on:

Philippians 4:8 think on these things

The part about “whatsoever things are lovely” has always given me pause.  I find it easier to identify things that are true, or honest, or a good report, or praise… but lovely?

When I looked up the word ‘lovely’  in my very favorite dictionary, the Webster’s 1828 (affiliate link), I got a much better sense of what that word means.

Lovely:
that may excite LOVE;
possessing qualities which may invite AFFECTION.

So, lovely thoughts are thoughts that spark love and affection in me!

I realized that the reason why I love reading my favorite daily devotional book, “Morning and Evening” by Charles Spurgeon (affiliate link), is because it is a consistent source of lovely thoughts about my God.  These thoughts cause me to look to my God with fresh love and affection!  What a treasure it is to find such a storehouse!

Let me share a couple of lovely thought quotes that have blessed me this past week:

Charles Spurgeon quote on security in my God.

Lovely thoughts put wind in my sails. They give me hope and energy as I go through my day. They lift me up out of this present world and set my affections on things above!  On a practical basis, they give me food for thought as I go about my daily tasks. May we experience the joy of lovely thoughts each day!

Where do you find your lovely thoughts?  I’d love for you to share with me in the comments below!

  1. I so appreciate your “lovely” post. Each morning I have coffee with the Lord. My Streams In The Desert, John Mac Arthur NASB, my journal and pen, and a cup of coffee close at hand. It is a lovely way to start the day focusing on the best thought I can ever have, the Lord Jesus Christ. He is truly lovely!

  2. Such beautiful thoughts. I find lovely everyday, I have quite a drive to work everyday, and to make the time pass I have Hillsong loud and make sure I appreciate the views. I live in New Zealand and it is such a beautiful little island. Starting your day with lovely thoughts makes for a good day.

    1. Lovely thoughts about my God literally increase my love, awe, and respect for my God. It’s like I can feel my heart expanding with greater love for Him! God bless you!
